The government’s announcement brings about new opportunities and some concerns for UCTE members.

Gail Shea has been renamed the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.  It was also announced that Lisa Raitt will now hold the portfolio for Transport and Leona Aglukkaq is responsible for the Environment portfolio.

“UCTE has worked well in the past with Minister Shea,” said Sister Christine Collins.  “I am confident for our coast guard members this will continue.  I also will be seeking meetings with Minister Raitt and Minister Aglukkaq to raise issues facing our members including those specific to the technical inspectors and the canal workers.”

Of concern is the appointment of Pierre Poilievre as Minister of State (Democratic Reform).  Mr. Poilievre is best known for intending to develop Right to freeload legislation – an attempt to deciminate Unions.  This appointment signals that it is full steam ahead for the continuing attack on Unions.  Although it is expected Mr. Poilievre will have his hands full with recent senate scandals UCTE will continue to monitor this portfolio as it continues to develop.
