Local 90915 is one of the largest marine Locals in Canada. It represents a widely diverse membership spread over a vast geographical area, stretching from Stephenville, Newfoundland to the most easterly city in North America, St. John’s,”The City of Legends”, and out to the far reaches of our celebrated Lighthouses. Most of the approximately 400 members work in various sections of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), as Ships’ Crews, SAR Controllers (Search & Rescue), Lighthouse Keepers, GLT Technicians, Yard and Shop Workers, and in Administration, just to name a few. Other members work as Technical Inspectors, Helicopter Personnel and Support Staff for Transport Canada, and a small group works for the St. John’s Port Corporation, a separate employer. The Local boasts the beautiful national historic sites of Cape Spear, Cape Race and Cape Bonavista Lighthouses. It includes 2 Canadian Coast Guard bases and represents members on a fleet of 12 vessels operating in the region. As Newfoundland is ahead of the rest of the world in terms of the time zone it occupies, so has the Local had a rich history of being the first off the blocks when it came to strike action, etc., with the rest of the mainland following. Local 90915 has proudly carried the UCTE torch throughout the years and this legacy will continue to be passed on!
